The happy inventor
In my business as a motorcycle appraiser, I've run into a lot of guys who like to spend a bunch of time and a ton of money on their bikes, but typically it's the Harley guys trying to squeeze a couple more ponies out of their dinosaurs so they can compete with the already mechanically advanced offshore counterparts. Now don't get me wrong, because I'm one of those Harley guys and have been most of my life. When I was young and impressionable, I bought into the lifestyle of being a Harley style biker and I turned up my nose at the prospect of any other brand, not that I thought that Harleys were better designed or manufactured, I just wanted to be what I though was "cool" at that time.
As time and education accumulates in my life I'm learning all kinds of things that dispute many of the notions I held as true for so many years, one of those notions being that coolness came from association. In reality, a great degree of coolness comes from being an individual proud of uniqueness in whatever category of life and not from the kind of bike I ride. Truth be told, one of the aspects of the Harley environment that I thought was "cool" is the myriad of the bolt ons and embellishments available for our bikes in the puruit of individualism, and I managed to build a business based on that idea.
So what does this have to do with GOLDWINGS you say? Well, I met a guy recently who has blown the doors off of my perceptions of coolness. This guy is an inventor and a motorcycle enthusiast, and he rides a "WING". A 2006 GL1800. On the exterior, it's a non descript looking machine just like so many other "WINGS" out there with a couple of bolt on bits of bling, some added creature comforts, and some extra electronics, but for the most part it's not a stand out machine at all, and I think that you "GOLDWING Guys" would say the same......at first glance.
But step back and drink in the subtleties of the improvements on this bike. What is the "boost" guage for? Why does he have a car tire on the rear? Oh, and the plackard on the rear fender that says "TURBO", what's that all about?
George is a unique individual if I ever met one. It's not too often you meet a guy who has invented a three wheeled alternative fuel car that is actually scheduled for production, and furthermore has developed a fully operational and time tested turbo charger system that is so seamlessly amalgamated within the factory dimensions of the "GOLDWING" that you can hardly tell it's there.
This machine is a "Sleeper" in the truest sense of the word. Just like the heading of an article about a "Wing" for sale states, "This ain't your daddy's Goldwing". She looks like a bland tame touring machine, but underneath is a sport bike eating, Harley hammering feat of technological development that needs to be bragged about. But like so many inventors with laid back personalities, the guy who designed this, in his spare time between developments on his car factory I might add, is as humble and non descript as his bike.
Now listen, I'm just a motorcycle enthusiast who has become an appraiser and I don't profess to know how "Goldwing guys" think, but I think this machine deserves some attention from those who are "in the know". The extent of workmanship that went into the development of this system is rivalled only by those pioneers who have pulled out all the stops in the top fuel category of the A.H.D.R.A. or the C.M.D.R.A. in pursuit of the 200 mph in 6 second mark.
George has his technology dialled in and it has been performing remarkably for no less than 50,000 Kms but there's no trophy at the end of the strip for him, so I though I should blow a little sunshine for him. Take a look and tell me you don't think this is a feat worth recognising. I do not have his permission to forward his contact information at this point, but if anyone is interested in more photos, I have some and I can be reached at; ron@CHROMEDREAMS.com
